Heian-Jingu Shrine
While Mark and the Mexicans were practising at the city hall I went next door to the famous Heian Shrine, built to honour two deified Emperors. It seemed to be some sort of special children's day and there were scores of elaborately dressed kids in miniature kimono having their photograph taken by their proud relatives. The gardens of the Heian shrine (600 yen entry) are famous for their views of cherry blossoms, irises and snow - none of which were in season, but the gardens were still very beautiful and I was able to "appreciate the autumn leaves" which is what one does at the moment.

After wandering around Kyoto all afternoon, met up with my friends at the Keikan Kyoto hall where they were working hard (and I wasn't, but trying to look busy so I'd get invited to the after party).

This morning took to the streets of Kyoto to explore this famous ancient city. Apparently General McArthur ordered that Kyoto be spared bombing during the Second World War on account of its priceless heritage and as a result many of the streets are unchanged from the feudal period (with the addition of electricity, plumbing and the ubiquitous vending machines). Kyoto has everything - big city lifestyle, ancient temples and gardens, cultural events both old and new...I could have spent a long time exploring, but I only had a weekend, so I decided to take it easy.

Hurray! After work we took an evening bus over the big bridge to Kyoto, one of the nearby big smokes... Tokushima is OK, but I'm a big city girl at heart! Mark has some Mexican friends here and together they are going to do an item for the 20th Kyoto Foreign Students Music Festival - a big deal, apparently. For the purposes of the weekend Mark is a Mexican Mariachi dancer, and I am the somewhat baffled team photographer, with access to all the perks (mainly free food).

Paua Grabbing Spree
Woke up at 4 pm today after sleeping post night shift and was invited along on a Paua Hunt. Paua (NZ black abalone for those of you who are non kiwis) excite a level of fanaticism among seafood-lovers. They are hard to get unless you are near a good spot or you know someone near a good spot - poachers and legal harvesting have long depleted stocks and nearly everything, legal or otherwise, goes out of the country (to Asia, sadly, where canny marketing has punters convinced they will live longer if they pay $$$ for paua).
So after a little brain warm-up over Texas Hold-em Poker at Tim's place (I lost), off we swanned in the mayoral vehicle to pick up friends until we were five in number, and then we indulged in a spot of bush-bashing downhill towards a "secret spot" (a tip from the CEO of the City Council apparently) where paua were found in great abundance. It took me no time to learn the flick with a screwdriver trick, and there was no problem finding paua above the size limit. The goods came at a price of course - scratches from gorse on the way down, and a few scrapes on the hands from over enthusiastic assaults on rock pools. It'll all be worth it tomorrow night, when we indulge in a huge paua cookup - everyone will do their fave recipe.
We returned to town in just enough time for me to make my night shift, and Tim to make his show...
